About Vannessa Viljoen

I’m Vannessa Viljoen — a writer, investigative journalist, creative mystic, and mother navigating transformation in public and in private. My journey lives at the crossroads of culture, care, and courage — shaped by Zimbabwean and Dutch heritage, informed by intergenerational trauma, and powered by an unwavering commitment to truth.

I write from the edges — of institutions, ideologies, and identities. I’ve contributed to platforms like The Daily Mirror, BBC Sounds, Channel 4, and West London Living, and served as Editor-in-Chief of a trauma-informed publication amplifying voices often left unheard. My background in law sharpened my critical thinking, but it’s lived experience — of honour-based abuse, neurodivergence, motherhood, disability, and spiritual deconstruction — that grounds my voice.

I speak not just from theory, but from what I’ve lived. And I write so that others might feel seen — not for their perfection, but for their complexity.

Who I Am Online: The Vigilant Butterfly

On Instagram, I go by @thevigilantbutterfly — a persona born not from branding, but from survival and vision.
That name is a reclamation. A reminder that vigilance is not fear — it’s awareness. And that metamorphosis can still happen, even with broken wings.

My IG is a living journal where I explore:

  • Motherhood as myth and revolution
  • Softness, neurodivergence, and self-expression
  • Creative healing through writing, sound, and stillness
  • Spiritual exile, embodied reclamation, and generational courage
  • Unshaming intimacy, autonomy, and womanhood

It’s also home to my upcoming podcast, Vision in Butterfly — a series designed to awaken higher selfhood through deep conversation, mystic realism, and personal truth.

What I Stand For

  • Spirituality without control – intuitive, healing, and internally led
  • Motherhood as leadership – a sacred role, not a societal afterthought
  • Softness as strategy – especially in a world that demands performance
  • Creativity as truth-telling – raw, revelatory, and prophetic
  • Family by consent, not coercion – rebuilding love beyond shame
  • Storytelling as revolution – because survival stories are sacred texts

What I’m Creating

  • Memoir: The Wingless Lover — an unflinching story of honour, exile, and transformation
  • Music: Traumacore soundscapes under Violet Moth, giving voice to grief, shadow, and softness
  • Podcast: Vision in Butterfly — launching soon, blending mysticism, social commentary, and self-awakening
  • Public Voicework: Speaking and writing on themes of identity, carerhood, trauma, faith transitions, and intergenerational truth
